Wareham Woman Charged After Pedestrian is Hit by Vehicle in Taunton Crosswalk

January 24, 2013

A 24-year-old Wareham woman was reportedly charged with operating a motor vehicle to endanger and passing an automobile stopped for a pedestrian after she allegedly struck a 53-year-old man in a Taunton crosswalk. Taunton Police said the man was crossing Broadway Street in front of the Taunton Trial Court when Kendra Dumont hit him with her vehicle. According to a police report, Dumont was headed north when she came upon a car that was stopped for the pedestrian. Dumont purportedly passed the other automobile before she realized there was a man in the crosswalk and then slammed on her brakes. Unfortunately, she was reportedly unable to come to a complete stop before striking the pedestrian. Following the collision, paramedics allegedly transported the 53-year-old man to Morton Hospital with non-life threatening wounds.

Pedestrian crashes in Massachusetts are often caused by speeding motorists, driver impairment, dangerous road conditions, distracted motorists, vehicle defects, and a great many other factors. In 2008, 75 of the 364 traffic fatalities that occurred throughout the state involved a pedestrian. This means that more than 20 percent of the individuals killed in automobile crashes were not a driver or passenger in a motor vehicle. Additionally, 233 pedestrians reportedly sustained severe injuries in Massachusetts wrecks in 2008. It is a sad fact that those who choose to travel on foot in our state may be unexpectedly injured or killed by a car, truck, motorcycle, or other motorized vehicle at any time.

When a Massachusetts pedestrian is struck by a motor vehicle, the resulting injuries are normally catastrophic or fatal. A pedestrian who was harmed as a result of a driver's careless or negligent act may be entitled to receive compensation for his or her medical costs, suffering and pain, any resulting temporary or permanent disability, lost wages, and other damages. In addition, certain relatives of someone who was killed by a negligent motorist may be eligible to file a wrongful death lawsuit. If you were hurt or a loved one died in a traffic collision that took place in Massachusetts, you should contact a skilled personal injury lawyer to discuss your case.
